My grandfather, Vernon Dibb, served on the original USCG Snohomish from 1911 (Revenue Cutter) to 1918. I have some of his original paperwork, there are several discharges, lifeboat man certificate, War Service Cert., and Petty Officer Certs. But I think the most interesting are his metal dog tags. They are hand written and have his fingerprint etched into the metal. Also have a few pictures of the ship and a couple of crewmen, will send them if you want them for your site. I am a Viet Nam veteran and find his military service very interesting.

I served on the Capstan from Sept. 1970 to April 1972. The officer in charge was BM1 James Chambers. It was my first duty station out of boot camp. I went on as a FA but later switch to Boatswains mate. We were stationed in Alexander, Virginia. To this day I wish I was still on it. We did several search and rescue with it. Ice breaking also. I am in the Coast Guard Auxiliary now.

In the "where are they" photos section of the site- the 110's -Raritan, Manitou, Mahoning, from GI NY are shown at SUNY Maritime college, Bronx, NYC, under the Throgs Neck Bridge, pierside to SS NY State. One went to their sister school but sometime friendly rival Kings Point. I forget which went where? There may have been trouble getting parts for them to continue training service. Maybe I'll get some pictures or a "news story" for us someday soon.

There was an earlier question about the future of the 65' WYTLs. There was push a few years ago to decomm all the 65s to save money...they were saved by a severe winter on the East Coast. To my knowledge, there are no plans for replacements. The oldest of the 140' WTGBs (Katmai Bay)is closing in on 30 years of service...65s are 10+ years older. As we all know, icebreaking is a "contact sport"...the tough little tugs are getting a little tired.

As the 65’s are slowly being decommissioned is there a plan to replace the class? The 140’s are rather unhandy while the 656’s are just the right size. Also looking for the builder’s specification for the 65’s. Always thought the hull was at least ¼” thick, however I heard that it might be but 3/16”. Any information would be appreciated.
